P6: Cultivating Academic Integrity in the AI Era: A Holistic Approach to Policy, Practice, and Pedagogy

Dr Sitalakshmi Venkatraman (Melbourne Polytechnic), and John Minicz (PlanResOp CEO)

The rapid evolution of Generative AI tools is fundamentally reshaping education and the workplace, warranting a robust culture of academic integrity paramount. This article outlines a holistic approach to address the challenges and opportunities presented by AI through transparency in policy, practice, and pedagogy. It emphasizes the growing importance of AI literacy, which includes foundational knowledge, responsible practices, and practical applications, alongside data literacy.
Key strategies involve: 1. developing clear policies mandating transparency in AI use, equity and guidelines, 2. creating pedagogical shifts with transparency in the impact of AI for enhancing learning and teaching through re-engineered assessments and critical thinking exercises into curricula, and 3. steering professional practice to integrate AI and human roles with a balance through transparency in training and support for students and educators. Overall, this framework aims to foster an environment where AI acts as a “sparring partner” not a “ghost writer”, enabling innovation, informed decision-making, and preparing individuals to thrive ethically in an AI-driven future.
