P4: Enhancing Academic Integrity through Ethical Integration of AI in Curriculum Design: A Case Study Approach for MBA Students
Dr. Madura Thivanka Pathirana and Dr. Sajani Dias, Edith Cowan University Sri Lanka, and Priyanka Nishantha Gunathilake, British School of Commerce
Integrating AI into assessments and learning systems can significantly enhance academic integrity by promoting the ethical use of AI tools. This research focuses on leveraging AI in curriculum and assessment design to foster ethical academic practices. The primary aim is to explore how AI can be ethically integrated into teaching methods, ensuring that MBA students not only utilize these tools effectively and ethically but also critically evaluate and validate AI-generated data. By incorporating AI into case study assignments, students are required to verify AI-generated data with actual primary and secondary data sources, identify data gaps, and provide critical reviews with recommendations. This method encourages rigorous data validation and critical thinking.
To gather data from Sri Lankan MBA students, a qualitative approach was employed. Interviews were conducted across eight major postgraduate institutions in the capital city of Sri Lanka. For a population of 375 students, a sample size of approximately 192 was determined, and for 112 teaching academics, a sample size of about 56 was recommended, ensuring a 95% confidence level with a 5% margin of error. These calculations balanced accuracy and practicality in data collection. For sampling, a proportional sampling method was used to ensure representation from each of the eight institutions.
Findings suggest that students benefit from this dual approach of using AI and validating data through traditional methods, reinforcing the importance of academic integrity and preparing students for future professional scenarios where they may encounter AI-generated information. This research recommends adopting simulated assignments over hypothetical case studies to add practical value to the learning experience. Further discussion highlighted the importance of integrating AI in a controlled, educational manner to uphold academic integrity, demonstrating practical applications and the benefits of such an approach.
Discussion starters:
- How can the integration of AI tools in assignments be optimized to ensure ethical usage and validation of data sources by students?
- What are the potential challenges and solutions in incorporating AI into curriculum design to support academic integrity?
- How can educators balance the use of AI with traditional data collection methods to enhance students’ research skills and critical thinking?
