P3: Assessment design to support Academic Integrity: Examples from a fully online learning environment

Dr Christiana Osei Bonsu, Dr Kavita Goel, Dr Uwe Kaufmann, Dr Mingwei Sun, Dr Donald Winchester, Dr Amanpreet Kaur, Edward Wilson, Australian Institute of Business

The proliferation of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has posed significant challenges to traditional assessment models, demanding an ongoing transformation of assessment designs towards the student learning process, GenAI incorporation, security and verification processes to inform progression (Lodge et al. 2023).
Drawing on our experience as the largest online MBA provider in Australia, we offer educators practical insights into structuring assessments that not only mitigate the risks of academic dishonesty but also enhance the student learning experience in the age of Gen AI. This poster covers the following topics:

  1. Rubric design – Guide students to embed critical and in-depth analysis in their assessments supported by relevant credible sources to demonstrate the learning process.
  2. Reference map – Require students to demonstrate the learning process and provide evidence of the content of literature used to uphold academic research integrity.
  3. Written report validated through oral presentation – Strengthens academic integrity by confirming that assessment was completed by the student.
  4. Authentic engagement with GenAI – Assessment requirement to ensure students’ responsible use of GenAI.
  5. Verbal summary – Validation and authenticity confirmation of student work submitted by random selection of students in each subject to demonstrate their skills acquired.
Discussion starters:
  • What challenges in academic integrity might your institution expect with fully online assessment?
  • What are some practical and feasible solutions to these in your context?
  • What changes to your assessment criteria might allow validation of submitted work?
