Misattribution is a difficult academic integrity risk because a citation may appear correct while the paraphrased claim distorts, overstates, understates or misrepresents the cited source. This presentation explores an assessment design approach used at the Australian Institute of Business (AIB), a fully online education provider, where students and research candidates provide verbatim quotes in footnotes for every citation, creating a visible evidence trail for each paraphrased claim.

Central to this approach is a structured GenAI prompt used after students have written their own paraphrases. The prompt compares the student-written paraphrase with the quoted source material and identifies possible misalignment, including changes in meaning, scope, certainty or emphasis. GenAI is therefore used as a checking and feedback tool, not to generate the paraphrase. This supports students and candidates to review and improve their own writing while retaining authorship and strengthening source fidelity.

The same process can assist educators to identify and verify possible misattribution in assessments with many citations, including submissions with 100 or more citations. The presentation argues that guided GenAI checking can support both academic integrity and higher-quality scholarly writing by combining source verification with student capability building.
