As generative AI and digital tools reshape assessment landscapes, institutions are challenged to design learning and evaluation approaches that are both authentic and resilient to integrity risks. This presentation addresses the need to build staff capability in designing and implementing interactive oral assessments (IOAs) as a strategy for strengthening academic integrity in an AI-enabled environment.

It showcases an interactive professional development initiative delivered to lecturers, program managers, and deans, focused on IOA design and practice. The training used experiential learning, peer dialogue, and practical frameworks to build confidence in creating, moderating, and scaling IOAs. Participants engaged in simulated assessment scenarios, rubric co-design, and strategies for embedding IOA components within existing curricula, while addressing concerns around workload, consistency, inclusivity and scalability.

Evaluation data and participant reflections suggest that IOAs enhance transparency, validity, support real-time demonstration of learning, and reduce risks associated with AI misuse. The presentation will share key findings on design principles, implementation challenges, and actionable recommendations for institutions seeking to embed integrity-resilient assessment practices through targeted staff development. Recommendations include embedding structured training, supporting communities of practice, and aligning policy and assessment design to sustain integrity-resilient learning environments. This work contributes to the growing evidence base on integrity-informed teaching.
