The rapid uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has shifted academic integrity from a problem of detection to one of design, capability, and culture. This roundtable argues that sustainable integrity in AI-rich environments requires “AI-transparent assessment cultures,” where both students and lecturers are equipped to use, disclose, and critically engage with AI in ethically responsible ways.

Focusing on the Australian higher education context, the session examines the integrity implications of AI use by both students (e.g., outsourcing cognition, unacknowledged co-authorship) and lecturers (e.g., inconsistent policy interpretation, inequitable assessment practices, and over-reliance on unreliable detection tools). It proposes a set of practical, scalable innovations: embedding AI transparency statements, designing process-oriented assessments, integrating oral and reflective components, and aligning institutional policy with pedagogical practice.

The discussion foregrounds staff capability as a critical gap—highlighting the need for clear governance, shared assessment standards, and decision-making frameworks that ensure procedural fairness. Participants will explore how to move beyond policing misconduct toward co-creating integrity cultures that treat AI as a legitimate but bounded tool.
