P12: Academic Integrity in the Digital Era: Understanding and Supporting Academics in Responding to Unethical Use of Generative AI
Yan Lee, Sahaya Jesto, Tamana Ali, Dr Saher Ali, Dr Accamma Oommen, Dr Manisha Thakkar (Torrens University Australia)
The rapid evolution of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and a lack of accurate detection tools pose challenges in identifying and establishing evidence to support academic misconduct allegations. Academics are at the frontline of identifying and reporting academic integrity breaches among students. Variations in academics’ perceptions and awareness of the unethical use of GenAI could lead to inconsistent detection, reporting, and outcomes, which undermine fairness in academic integrity procedures.
Drawing on preliminary insights from our mixed-methods study exploring Health Sciences academics’ awareness, perceptions, and experiences of reporting students’ unethical use of GenAI, this roundtable session will explore how institutions can better support academic staff in detecting and reporting GenAI-related misconduct. It will further initiate discussions on the emerging themes of legal, ethical, and practical considerations in managing students’ unethical use of GenAI.
Participants will engage in sharing reflections on their experiences, institutional practices, strategies, and collaboratively explore ways to uphold fairness, consistency and clarity in academics’ decision making regarding suspected unethical use of GenAI. Together, we aim to examine how governance, pedagogy, and policy can evolve to educate and support academics and students in maintaining academic integrity in a rapidly shifting technological landscape.
