P10: Challenges and Benefits of Interactive Oral Presentation: The Case of Fully Online Learning Environment

Dr Christiana Osei Bonsu, Dr Uwe Kaufmann, Dr Kavita Goel, Dr Amanpreet Kaur, Dr Mingwei Sun, Dr Donald Winchester, Edward Wilson (Australian Institute of Business)

As a fully online education provider, one of the strategies recently implemented with the advent of GenAI tools is a move towards an alternate assessment practice approach from pre-recorded oral presentation to live interactive oral presentation assessment design in some subjects. While both types of oral presentations develop students’ communication skills, pre-recorded oral presentation is a one-way communication and does not provide the opportunity to ask students questions in real time to validate the achievement of subject learning outcomes. In addition, it does not mitigate reliance on AI tools in preparing scripts for their presentation. On the other hand, live interactive oral presentation is a two-way conversation where students must answer real time questions and receive immediate feedback. This approach promotes academic integrity as students cannot use GenAI tools to answer real time questions. This reduces the risk of academic dishonesty and minimises the inappropriate use of AI tools for demonstrating subject competency.
In this poster, we will show how we have leveraged technology such as Zoom and Scheduling on Moodle for interactive oral presentations and share our experience on the benefits and challenges.
