P1: Pedagogical approaches for educators to design assessments that promote Academic Integrity in the age of Gen AI
Bahar Ghodoosi and Padmini Chevi Reddy, Torrens University Australia
The aim of this presentation is to provide insights into, and pedagogical approaches for, educators to design assessments that promote academic integrity in the age of Gen AI. In this poster, original data collection has been conducted across various verticals such as Health & Education, Design, Business & Hospitality in Torrens University Australia. We consider students from multiple courses such as VET, undergraduate and postgraduate. Case studies in formative and summative assessments which are being implemented at Torrens University were analysed to improve assessment design and integrity for decreasing the risk of misuse of GenAI. These assignments included discussion forums, reflective report, case study analysis, quizzes, and practical assignments. Then an effort has been made to compare different strategies to help educators find the best solution that supports Academic Integrity. This work contributes by offering a comprehensive list of assessment design strategies for educators to integrate integrity-focused principles into their teaching methods.
Key findings from the research are:
- The design of assignments such as project-based and problem-solving tasks, can reduce opportunities not to breach and to follow the policies of Academic Integrity
- Providing constructive feedback that helps students to analyse their progress that eventually led to decrease in breaching the Academic Integrity policy
- Pedagogical approaches of providing resources and conducting educative discussions to enhance proper use of GenAI in improving authentic academic writing that eventually raises awareness and sets clear expectations within the curriculum.
These findings highlight the importance of curriculum and assessment design in promoting academic integrity. Educators can learn from these strategies to create a learning environment that emphasise honesty and ethical behaviour.
Discussion starters:
- How can educators design assessments with the goal of promoting academic integrity?
- How can collaborative projects be designed to minimize the risk of academic integrity breaches?
- How can increase self-awareness of students about academic integrity and AI?
